The Collection

16 June 2024

The collection hit 300 last week, 300 different lightweight references. More if you take into account the different variations of many a number. I'm asked quite a lot what my favourite team or teams are but my answer isn't anything exciting. Just sentimental.

When I was about 7 or 8 my Dad gave me his collection of Subbuteo. It was a biscuit tin with no lid, full of players, a pitch, a scoreboard with team names and 2 goals. We had a single armchair in our front room that sat in the bay window and to avoid taking up too much space, I used to wedge a goal into the back of this chair and play one on one competitions with the different teams I had. I'd run through entire FA Cup's during the summer holidays. Wonderful memories!

I held on to those players for about 15 years but sold them as part of a 'spring clean' whilst moving house back in 2006. If my memory serves my rightly, I got £35 for the lot. Since coming back to the game, I've tried to remember all of the teams my Dad passed down to me in order to recapture them and relive a few of the happy thoughts awoken by seeing them.

Every now and then I'll come across another team and remember that I did actually have them all those many moons ago. It's those teams. Mainly inexpesive, boring to most, but smile inducing to me. Those teams are my favourites.

My eldest daughter is fascinated by the teams and all the different colours. Maybe one day I'll be able to pass the collection down to her. I hope so.
